How does Outliers connect to MY life?

Outliers was a very mysterious and quite connectable book. Gladwell describes the differences that can connect to my life, and the lives of many others. These connections are the outliers in our lives. These outliers are the differences that make us unique and noticeable. An outlier is something that is situated away or that is markedly different from others of the sample or related body.

A connection to my life is when my mom went through her pregnancy. During the beginning years of my parents’ marriage, they were sure they wanted to have children. At this time, my mother didn’t know that she carried a genetic disease called a translocation. When my mom got pregnant for the first time, my parents were very excited for the life of their new child. My parents bought clothes, diapers, and even created a nursery during the first two months of the pregnancy. About two and a half months in, my mother experienced the most tragic incident that could’ve ever happened. She miscarried her first child. This experience made her feel like an outlier. The knowledge that she might not be able to have kids, frightened and made her very angry. She felt different than all of her other friends, and she was jealous of how their pregnancies’ were healthy and going normal. Her outlier feelings made her become sad and alone. Luckily, she came out of these feelings and tried again to have a baby. My parents but everything in the past, and hoped for the best. At this time she still didn’t know about her translocation. My mom became pregnant again, and became very aware and fearful to endanger the baby. She stayed inside and incubated the carrier of the unknown disease. Again, the baby miscarried, and my mom felt beaten. She was an outlier; she wasn’t able to have children. She saw other mothers and families holding and loving their children, but she wasn’t able to have her dream. She felt different and some what unique compared to others. Her thoughts of maybe she wasn’t supposed to have children. Well, she wanted to accomplish her dream, and she knew that she was going to. She then sought genetic counseling. She found out that her number 3 and 18 chromosomes translocated. This means that when the baby started to develop, the translocation halted the growth and prevented the baby from developing. The doctor said that she most likely wasn’t able to hold a pregnancy and that she should stop trying. Well, against the doctors words, my parents did try again, and the pregnancy worked. No miscarriages or outlier feelings. She felt proud and showed off her stomach. She was told that her pregnancy was healthy and that although the baby carried the translocation, it didn’t affect his growth.
My mom then conquered her inner outlier, and created me. Her outlier was that she wasn’t able to have a baby. She felt alone, and sad, but her outlier turned for the better, and showed that maybe being an outlier can show you the better things in life and to never give up.

I can also connect to the 10,000 hour rule. When I started playing guitar, I found it to be quite difficult. I knew that practice was key, and that I needed to try and work very hard to achieve the ability that I wanted to. “The Beatles ended up traveling to Hamburg five times between 1960 and the end of 1962. On the first trip they played 106 nights, five or more hours a night. On their second trip, they played 92 times."  (49) This shows and connects to me by saying that much practice is needed to achieve a talent at something you want to be good at. The Beatles practiced everyday for multiple hours, and although I didn’t practice for 4-5 hours a day, I did try to be the best at what my teacher was teaching me. I tried to achieve my goal of practicing daily. “We played seven nights a week. At first we played almost nonstop till twelve-thirty, when it closed, but as we got better the crowds stayed till two most mornings.”(49) This shows pure dedication in The Beatles’ passion. They wanted to become the best they possibly could, so they played long nights and practiced every day. Although I never played 10,000 hours, I did always try my best, and wanted to be the best I possibly could. I can relate to The Beetles because they always tried their hardest, and worked long hours to be the best. “We got better and got more confidence. We couldn’t help it with all the experience playing all night long.” (49) As I became better with guitar, I also became more confident, and wanted to play longer and longer. Although I never became the best, I improved my guitar skills greatly. When I started in April of 2002 I barley knew how to hold the guitar, but at the end of June 2008, I knew how to read sheet music, and play by ear! Learning guitar taught me that practice is much needed, and that the skills needed to be perfect take a lot of time. The time needed to become perfect does take 10,000 hours. These hours are consumed with large amounts of hard work and dedication that are needed to achieve your best ability.
Another part of Outliers that I can relate to is flight of Avianca 052. As a child, I was very timid, and lacked courage. I rarely talked in school, and was a little unsocial. This related to the story when Klotz didn’t use strong enough words to express their point. “ATC: And Avianca zero-five-two heavy, ah, I’m gonna bring you about fifteen miles northeast and then turn you back onto the approach. Is that okay with you and your fuel?
Klotz: I guess so. Thank you very much.” (199) When Klotz said I guess so, this indicated that he isn’t positive and isn’t sure about the situation. He didn’t want to stand up the ATC and say that they needed to land now, and there was no time to waste. He wasn’t bold enough to speak up, and command because the JFK ATC’s are known to be rude. “The thing you have to understand about that crash,” Ratwatte said “is that New York air traffic controllers are famous for being rude, aggressive and bullying.” (200)  This tells us that to an immigrant, speaking up to a foreign person can be very intimidating. As a child, I was very much independent probably as a result of being an only child. I grew and learned how to talk to people over time, but from a young age, I had a problem of speaking to strangers, adults, or anyone intimidating. Intimidating people are very difficult to speak to. Speaking to an unknown person, who obviously has a harsh reputation, is very scary, and is hard to get the point across. I do agree that the captain should’ve spoken up, but I also do agree that speaking to new people is also very difficult!
Being an Outlier accompanies everyone’s lives. Everyone is an outlier in some way. An Outlier is someone that is different. Is different bad? Uniqueness is what people noticeable. Being noticed is much easier when standing out of the crowd. Being ordinary isn’t very much fun. Standing out makes you be remembered. An outlier is a difference from others. This can apply to almost any circumstance. An outlier is neither good nor bad. Being an outlier shows that differences are what makes humans recognizable. Similarities are noticed, but uniqueness is embraced.

Ugly Poetry Prompt

The Ogres

The Ogres
Green, fat, and sedentary
The fat ones eat mice
throw the bones to the floor
a compost pile grows and grows
Their lives consumed with dirt
Being the dirtiest possible
Mud baths and skunk perfumes
Consume their lives
The Ogres live their lives
Death comes as a priveledge
The dirt
The stench
The filth
All ordinary for the green monsters
Their ears
Small craters
Wax drips from them
Their eyes, black with depth
Never ending filth
Their ugliness
Deep within their soul
No way of getting it out
The ugly
A curse
The Orgres

Microfiction: The clock struck one

The clock struck one. There was only 2 hours left. In the back of my mind I knew it could never be done. My task; to steal La Joconde, better known as The Mona Lisa. My destiny was chosen, and I had no choice. I needed to retrieve La Joconde or else my life would come to a halt. I was blackmailed into stealing this masterpiece because of a previous reward that I never returned. I was told that if I hadn't retrieved the piece that I would, and will be hunted down, and killed. This thought sent shivers down my spine. The thought of not knowing my death frightened me.
The time had arrived. I stood face to face with the world wide celebrity. Inside le Musée du Louvre were guards that were obviously armed and not afraid to use their weapons if the circumstances arrived. I thought about my fastest escape route. An emergency exit on the right and left, but guards stood their post in front of these doors. The only other route was to walk with her out the front door. My decision was made up. I grabbed Mona and jolted to the right exit which was closest to the street. I kicked the switch blade out of my heel and stabbed the guard in his right thigh. He immediately fell to the floor, and yelled for backup. Before the next guard could get to the door, the alarms had locked the door and I was out. Down the stairs and into the street I went. My hood covered my sweaty head and Mona was covered in a portfolio style bag. The sirens became louder and louder, the cops were on the road now. I blended in with the crowd, and didn’t attract any attention. When the cop cars passed by me, my heart rate dropped tremendously. A large relief was off my shoulders, but I still had to get La Joconde to my blackmailer. Street corner after street corner, I eventually arrived at La Rue de Partir. I reached his building with 15 minutes to spare. I repaid my debt, and out I went; alive and breathing. My life was spared, but I still had to leave France without being recognized. I accomplished the un-accomplishable. I stole The Mona Lisa

TU Tuesday- Editorial

Evaluate a speaker’s point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and rhetoric, identifying any fallacious reasoning or exaggerated or distorted evidence.
After reading the article on yound drivers safety, I now understand why driving laws are put in place. These laws can be "harsh" but are created for a reason! Connecticuts young drivers laws are now proven to be effective! The article says, "The number of crashes in which 16- or 17-year old drivers were identified as a contributing factor was down 28 percent in 2009." 28 percent is quite a difference! These laws indicate that a driver that hasn't had their license for at least six months cannot drive another individual in the car. I can see that these laws have prevented accidents and maybe even deaths! Although they may be "inconvenient," they are there for a one and only one reason; to prevent injury and accidents. Childrens may rebel against these laws, but the article says "Parents, obviously, are the first line of defense in making the restrictions effective -- and in protecting their children's well-being." This means that the parents have to be responsible enough to enforce these laws. I think these laws are effective, meaningful, and strict.

Temperament-The Australian Cattle Dog is a loyal, brave, hardworking, herding breed. One of the most intelligent breeds, they are not the kind of dog to lay around the living room all day or live happily in the backyard with only a 15 minute walk. They need much more exercise than that and something to occupy their mind daily or they will become bored, leading to serious behavior problems. They need action in their life and will do best with a job. This alert dog is excellent in the obedience ring and will excel in agility and herding trials.

Shedding-The short-haired, weather-resistant coat needs little care and is very easy to groom. Just comb and brush with a firm bristle brush, and bathe only when necessary. This breed tends to shed their coats once or twice per year. Their coat doesn't shed very often.

Health/Allergies/Vaccines-Life expectancy of 12-15 years. They are prone to hot spots, which can be managed with adding an oil to their food. They are prone to hip dysplasia, and PRA. Regular shots and rabies vaccines are a must if the dog will be outdoors often.

Scared to make contact

TU Tuesday Guest Speaker

Pose- I did think he was very comfortable speaking with us. The way he spoke, without studdering, clearly and affectivly got to the point. He also said that he teaches classes at UAlbany also, so I would think he would be comfotable talking to a large group of people. He also connected very well with all the students. When a student asked a question, he directly looked them in the eye and answered the question towards them, but also told the class loud and clear. When I asked my question, he looked directly at me and answered my question.

Clarity- I think his pronounciation was loud and abled all the class to hear him. Although I did notice he was chewing gum, he clearly and affectivly told what he wanted to tell. He often did tell stories about his career, that connected back to the students questions. He often did use "big words," but he used them in a clear and contrusctive way. He didn't use such a large vocabulary that none of us could understand him, but he added descriptive words when necessary. Such as when he was explaining his college carrer, he used desciptive techniques and words that he was taught.

Volume- I was easily able to understand Paul. His voice was clear and loud, and abling the whole class to understand every word he would say. There is no specfic examples for this, because his whole time during the class was easily understable.

Information- He often answered out questions with stories from his career. Most of what he had to say was usful, and gave us information about finding ways to become good writers, by reading. He went in-depth for each question, and took the time to answer it to his full capability. I didn't think that there was much unnecessary information that he told, but maybe his stories sometimes led off topic.

Organization- Paul often did lead off on small tangents, but they always did connect back to the question asked. His "tangents" were very informational and helped answering our questions. For example when he answered my question, he connected it to an author he previously had spoken to, and told me the inforamtion that he recieved. His organization was very well done, and clearly described all the information that was necessary to answer the question.

I think that our class was affective in holding on the hour and a half conversation. Our questions often connected with the previous questions, or something he had to say when answering. I asked questions mainly relating to how and why he writes the stories he writes about. My questions led him to explain his decisions when researching his work. I feel like the questions we asked let us understand Pauls life, and how he became the journalist he is today.

I really liked having a guest speaker join our class. I think that I would like to have another speaker come back in. I think it taught us about "real life writing" and how journalists create their work and their steps in doing so. I do not have a reccomendation for the next writer, I think the decision should be made by the class as a whole, and I do not know many authors names.

Where did he become so educated?
If he smells like beer, and is homeless, how does he recieve money?

I find it interesting that Poppy is kind of the leader of the table, and that all the others listened to him with passion.
I also think its interesting that Poppy invited him to his "house" without even really knowing him.

If his best work was on the Harry Reasoner show, why didn't he stay there? Did he get fired?
Are the letters recieved at the CBS office mainly replies from Roonies recent articles?

I find it pretty interesting and hard to believe that an 82 year old man loves working with tools and crafting things.
I also found it interesting that his columns are published in 147 newspapers worldwide!

Why would he decline autographs and such when fans approached him?
Were his columns supposed to always complain about something, and always find the bad in something good?

I found it interesting that he met his wife in the sixth grade, and were married until her death.
I also found it quite interesting in that he said he was going to work to his death; and when he retired, his death happened a week later.

Oponion Prompt #13

Opinion Prompt 13. We should replace number grades with letter grades.

I think that number grades shouldnt be replaces with letter grades. I like number grades in that, they are more specific and that they can be turned into letter grades. With letter grades, if you recieve an "A" that could be anything from a 93-96. While with a 94, you are able to have an exact grade and also you are able to change that to an "A" if you wanted to. I really like the number grades just because you can average out your grades and then see what your GPA is. I like that because with letter grades you are unable to find out your final GPA because they're not specific enough. I disagree in that number grades should be changed to letter grades.

I Want to Write About #86

The first time I saw the ocean was when I was about eight years old. I traveled to Maya Riviera, Mexico. My family and I stayed at a very nice hotel, and I remember loving and enjoying the enormous pool. Although the pool was very luxurious, the ocean was simply breathtaking. I remember jumping in the slow but powerful tides and looking for small and colorful tropical fish. The powerful ocean can do anything it desires, it can sweep you out to a remote island in the blink of an eye. Its beauty and ever lasting distance along the bright and forever going horizon during a beautiful and magnificent sunset. Out of all the oceans that I've traveled to, the Maya Riviera ocean was definately the most memorable. Its beauty, power, and sound takes you to pure paradise.

A cat has nine lives.

"a cat has nine lives," is an old expression saying that cats can resurrect from the dead, or that they tend to stay away from harm. I think this expression actually means that cats have such fast reflexes that trouble or danger is not much of a problem for them. Their nine lives derive from their "cat like reflexes" and simply just means that cats are very fast and quite lucky at some times. Their jumping, clawing, and flexible body allows them to accomplish many dangerous and incapable tasks that us humans are unable to perform. I don't know where the "9" part comes from, but I do know that cats are quite capable of avoiding the gates of death. Maybe this is suggesting that after a certain amount of certain death encounters, their fate catches up with them and finally stops them. Cats are extraordinary animals that are much capable of more than just 9 lives!

TU Tuesday

Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone.

Pull at least FIVE words or phrases out, describe their effect, and tell what the overall impact those words or phrases give to the piece as a whole.
 the third installment opened massively
Installment: sequel, part
Many are saying its $54 million haul
Haul: sum, amount gained or aquired
Pretty swell for a $5 million investment.
Swell: well, good
Still, even with the inevitable dropoff
Inevitable: uncontrollable, out of your hands.
another holdover, ”Footloose,”
holdover: past object, something from the past.
This article taken from the Times Union, talks about the overwhelming popularity of the newly released Paranormal Activity. The words and phrases are specifically chosen to exaggerate the high volume of viewers, and the level of frightness. The author says, ""Paranormal Activity” franchise, the third installment opened massively, claiming several records in the process." The author also proclaims that, "Many are saying its $54 million haul makes it the biggest horror movie opening ever."
Lais then explains that Paranormal Activity 3 was the largest opening that October has ever had. Lais says,"Pretty swell for a $5 million investment." This means their profit will be quite large. The author then explains how after two weeks, many horror movies tend to decline in viewers. "Still, even with the inevitable dropoff of week two for horror movies, this one is projected to make approximately $113 million."
Lastly, the author then descibes the other "hit" movies in the theatres right now. "Another holdover, Footloose,” at number three. Then he briefly explains the failing movies and how Paranormal Activity 3 is truly a superior horror movie.

HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS!

This book used to send shivers down my spine. Mr. Grinch was, and is a christmas legend. When my parents used to read me this book, I knew that the holidays were soon approaching, which would make me anxious for presents. The detail that Dr. Suess uses about The Grinch is pure magical. Growing up I would sing the Mr. Grinch song all day song. This song is known by all children and parents because of its long known history. My parents used to tell me about how when they were children they would await The Grinch show to come on every Christmas Eve. The Grinch purely moulded my christmas childhood into a song loving, movie seeing, Grinch loving time.

O=Ohio

Advantages:

The weather of Ohio is amazing! I would love having 90 degree days and spending time in the cities
Ohio University has many choices for different courses, also I found that the student to teacher ratio is very good which means you will have a closer connection and be able to ask and feel more comfortable.
SCHOOL SPIRIT! With such a strong football and basketball team, school spirit is a definite fun way to spend free time
Ohio gets a lot of research money from the state and federal government which provides for informing labs and new equipment.
Undergraduate students have a higher chance of getting into their graduate and professional schools.

Disadvantages:

It is very expensive to go to the University of Ohio

It is very far from home, which means that visiting would be very expensive because of flying back and forth.

There is traffic everywhere in Ohio which may lead to being late to classes

Vintage photo

This is a photo of George Custer and his dog. This photo means a lot to me because dogs are very important to me. My two pups are my only siblings and are truly a mans best friend! This photo even shows that dogs were important and common in the United States history. Dogs provide an animal that will love you under any circumstance. Dogs will always be there for you, just like my two dogs are. I really like this photo because it shows and even explains how dogs are always reliable even to an army officer who was a commander in the civil war!

My name is Asher Lev, by Chaim Potok.

My name is Taylor, the Taylor, about whom you have read in the newspaper and magazines, about whom you talk so much at your dinner affairs and cocktail parties, the notorious and legendary. I am not a celebrity but am rather legendary. I am the one that kids want to become. I live the life that adults wish they could live. My life consists of ordinary things, but in exciting and new ways. I live my life the way I want to live my life. I am who I always wanted to be. I am called "The One," but I am just Taylor. To me, I am just a person that people look up to, or a person that is a role model. I did the right things which led me down the right road. I made the correct decisions that made me who I am today> Always make sure the decisions you make are the ones that you will NEVER regret.

TU Tuesday Blog

Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is valid and the evidence is relevant and sufficient; identify false statements and fallacious reasoning.

http://blackboard.neric.org/webapps/portal/frameset.jsp?tab_id=_2_1&url=%2fwebapps%2fblackboard%2fexecute%2flauncher%3ftype%3dCourse%26id%3d_2263_1%26url%3d

I believe that Jessica makes a very well claim. She explians that she loves running and just finished a hald marathon. She also says that she isn't a fast runner, but actually rather slow. She tells us that slower can be better. Speed can be a goal for someone who plans on winning it, but she does it for health purposes. She feels that speed is no need but rather that running is a great way to stay in shape. She would love to become a little faster, but its not anything she needs. She knows she's doing a healthy thing, and achieving one of her goals. I completely agree with her statements in that speed shouldn't be all that important. I think that just exercising and actually going out and running a half marathon is important. She makes valid claims that running is great exercise and that will only do better for you. I dont think that there are any false claims in this blog post.

The blog prompt Haiku

I think the poem also refers to his father. Maybe his father died in autumn, or maybe there was a happy memory. Maybe he just realized that he looks like his father, or is aging. This phrase about his fathers face may inspire you to feel either happy or sad depending on what he was meaning. There is many possibilites of how this poem may inspire you to feel, but haikus are so short that there are many ways of interpreting it.

My Haiku:

http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Family-fought-with-intruders-2201268.php

Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

a. Develop FIVE factual, interpretive, and evaluative questions for further exploration of the topic(s).

Matthew Joe and a group of 5 other people intruded the home of a family in Cohoes, NY. When Joe entered the home, the homeowners son stabbed him multiple times, and subdued him until the police came. At least 2 of the burgulars had guns but the grown son stabbed Joe before any further destrcution was done. Joe was charged with first degree robery, first degree burguary and third degree larceny. Chief of police Bill Heslin said they havent ruled out the possibilty of charging the son. When the crime was being committed, the homeowners wife arrived at the home, but she called the police and stayed away from the home. Supposedly, the victims didnt know any of the intruders. Although the intruders knew the home was occupied and was not a random invasion.

-What was the purpose of invading the home?
-Where these intruders in a gang?
-Why would they consider charging the son if it was self defense?
-How much time is Joe going to spend in prison?
-Did the son have past self defense skills?

Opinion Prompt 7 - Everyone should have access to healthcare services.

I think that if you are a citizen of the United States, you should be guaranteed healthcare. These services can be life or death for many people. I think that healthcare should be provided for everyone, but maybe in different levels. If you pay more for healthcare, you will have more coverage. But if you dont have any coverage, you should be given the basic or necessary healthcare that will provide you with basic expenses and average coverage. Healthcare is needed for the people of the world. Peoples health must and should be provided for. Mainly, peoples health is uncontrollabe, and therefore, healthcare is needed by citizens.

Web Gallery of Art

When I was about the age of 6 or 7, I was obsessed with the movie Spy Kids. This piece reminds me of one Floops Fooglies that was in the movie. I would watch this movie endlessly. When the sequels started coming out, I was even more obsessed. These foonigans were created by putting real people in a machine that would disfigure their body. These movies shaped my childhood, in that they taught me not to lose my imagination. This piece or fooglie brings back memories of my early childhood.

Love can be expressed through words - 142 words

I have  personal experience with this quote, mainly because of my uncles death. When I eulogized at his funeral, the words that I spoke came from the heart. All of the past experiences that I’ve accomplished and done with my uncle were expressed through my words. Not just my words were expressed through the heart. My father and grandfather also spoke of past experiences that stuck with them all their lives. As I expressed my words, I forgot about any disease or tragedy that affected him, but rather I spoke of the loving and good times that we had spent together. Love was expressed through words during this time because we were unable to express actions because of the circumstances. My uncle was always a good man, that went through way to much than he deserved. We will always remember uncle Kevin.

N, N what Begins With N?

Natures wonders are magnificent, and were created my the mother who decorated all the land. Nurturing animals watch out for their young, and create a caring and safe enviroment for them. Neither frogs nor toads can actually give you warts. Nurse sharks who are generally found in Caribbean are quite dosile and can grow up to 12-15 ft. Naming a new species can sometimes be quite diffcult depending on the diverse qualities the animal possesses. Never touch a creature of nature without knowing the power or ability it has. Noon time is when many corals open because without photosynthesis, their zooxanthellae will bleach and cause them to die. Northern regions of the Atlantic have colder waters which many fish and photosynthetic plants are unable to live in. Now when you go to the oceans, you will know a little bit more about sea life.

Faces Upon Nameless Faces

We talk.
We look.
We see day after day
face upon nameless face

We ignore.
We think.
We see day after day
face upon nameless face
that sparks a everlasting camera
stored in our complex
and highly organized
mental filer,
our brain.

Our thoughts, we forget
or maybe just dont know
how to get them back
until our dreams project and
find these random but important thoughts
that our brain stored with
no knowledge of remembering
these days after days
and faces upon nameless faces.
