TU Tuesday

Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone.

Pull at least FIVE words or phrases out, describe their effect, and tell what the overall impact those words or phrases give to the piece as a whole.
 the third installment opened massively
Installment: sequel, part
Many are saying its $54 million haul
Haul: sum, amount gained or aquired
Pretty swell for a $5 million investment.
Swell: well, good
Still, even with the inevitable dropoff
Inevitable: uncontrollable, out of your hands.
another holdover, ”Footloose,”
holdover: past object, something from the past.
This article taken from the Times Union, talks about the overwhelming popularity of the newly released Paranormal Activity. The words and phrases are specifically chosen to exaggerate the high volume of viewers, and the level of frightness. The author says, ""Paranormal Activity” franchise, the third installment opened massively, claiming several records in the process." The author also proclaims that, "Many are saying its $54 million haul makes it the biggest horror movie opening ever."
Lais then explains that Paranormal Activity 3 was the largest opening that October has ever had. Lais says,"Pretty swell for a $5 million investment." This means their profit will be quite large. The author then explains how after two weeks, many horror movies tend to decline in viewers. "Still, even with the inevitable dropoff of week two for horror movies, this one is projected to make approximately $113 million."
Lastly, the author then descibes the other "hit" movies in the theatres right now. "Another holdover, Footloose,” at number three. Then he briefly explains the failing movies and how Paranormal Activity 3 is truly a superior horror movie.

HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS!

This book used to send shivers down my spine. Mr. Grinch was, and is a christmas legend. When my parents used to read me this book, I knew that the holidays were soon approaching, which would make me anxious for presents. The detail that Dr. Suess uses about The Grinch is pure magical. Growing up I would sing the Mr. Grinch song all day song. This song is known by all children and parents because of its long known history. My parents used to tell me about how when they were children they would await The Grinch show to come on every Christmas Eve. The Grinch purely moulded my christmas childhood into a song loving, movie seeing, Grinch loving time.

O=Ohio

Advantages:

The weather of Ohio is amazing! I would love having 90 degree days and spending time in the cities
Ohio University has many choices for different courses, also I found that the student to teacher ratio is very good which means you will have a closer connection and be able to ask and feel more comfortable.
SCHOOL SPIRIT! With such a strong football and basketball team, school spirit is a definite fun way to spend free time
Ohio gets a lot of research money from the state and federal government which provides for informing labs and new equipment.
Undergraduate students have a higher chance of getting into their graduate and professional schools.

Disadvantages:

It is very expensive to go to the University of Ohio

It is very far from home, which means that visiting would be very expensive because of flying back and forth.

There is traffic everywhere in Ohio which may lead to being late to classes

Vintage photo

This is a photo of George Custer and his dog. This photo means a lot to me because dogs are very important to me. My two pups are my only siblings and are truly a mans best friend! This photo even shows that dogs were important and common in the United States history. Dogs provide an animal that will love you under any circumstance. Dogs will always be there for you, just like my two dogs are. I really like this photo because it shows and even explains how dogs are always reliable even to an army officer who was a commander in the civil war!

My name is Asher Lev, by Chaim Potok.

My name is Taylor, the Taylor, about whom you have read in the newspaper and magazines, about whom you talk so much at your dinner affairs and cocktail parties, the notorious and legendary. I am not a celebrity but am rather legendary. I am the one that kids want to become. I live the life that adults wish they could live. My life consists of ordinary things, but in exciting and new ways. I live my life the way I want to live my life. I am who I always wanted to be. I am called "The One," but I am just Taylor. To me, I am just a person that people look up to, or a person that is a role model. I did the right things which led me down the right road. I made the correct decisions that made me who I am today> Always make sure the decisions you make are the ones that you will NEVER regret.

TU Tuesday Blog

Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is valid and the evidence is relevant and sufficient; identify false statements and fallacious reasoning.

I believe that Jessica makes a very well claim. She explians that she loves running and just finished a hald marathon. She also says that she isn't a fast runner, but actually rather slow. She tells us that slower can be better. Speed can be a goal for someone who plans on winning it, but she does it for health purposes. She feels that speed is no need but rather that running is a great way to stay in shape. She would love to become a little faster, but its not anything she needs. She knows she's doing a healthy thing, and achieving one of her goals. I completely agree with her statements in that speed shouldn't be all that important. I think that just exercising and actually going out and running a half marathon is important. She makes valid claims that running is great exercise and that will only do better for you. I dont think that there are any false claims in this blog post.

The blog prompt Haiku

I think the poem also refers to his father. Maybe his father died in autumn, or maybe there was a happy memory. Maybe he just realized that he looks like his father, or is aging. This phrase about his fathers face may inspire you to feel either happy or sad depending on what he was meaning. There is many possibilites of how this poem may inspire you to feel, but haikus are so short that there are many ways of interpreting it.

My Haiku:

My life endless time
accomplishments known to all
life lives on forever

http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Family-fought-with-intruders-2201268.php

Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

a. Develop FIVE factual, interpretive, and evaluative questions for further exploration of the topic(s).

Matthew Joe and a group of 5 other people intruded the home of a family in Cohoes, NY. When Joe entered the home, the homeowners son stabbed him multiple times, and subdued him until the police came. At least 2 of the burgulars had guns but the grown son stabbed Joe before any further destrcution was done. Joe was charged with first degree robery, first degree burguary and third degree larceny. Chief of police Bill Heslin said they havent ruled out the possibilty of charging the son. When the crime was being committed, the homeowners wife arrived at the home, but she called the police and stayed away from the home. Supposedly, the victims didnt know any of the intruders. Although the intruders knew the home was occupied and was not a random invasion.

-What was the purpose of invading the home?
-Where these intruders in a gang?
-Why would they consider charging the son if it was self defense?
-How much time is Joe going to spend in prison?
-Did the son have past self defense skills?

Opinion Prompt 7 - Everyone should have access to healthcare services.

I think that if you are a citizen of the United States, you should be guaranteed healthcare. These services can be life or death for many people. I think that healthcare should be provided for everyone, but maybe in different levels. If you pay more for healthcare, you will have more coverage. But if you dont have any coverage, you should be given the basic or necessary healthcare that will provide you with basic expenses and average coverage. Healthcare is needed for the people of the world. Peoples health must and should be provided for. Mainly, peoples health is uncontrollabe, and therefore, healthcare is needed by citizens.
